Bianca Andreescu has been all over the sports news headlines following her maiden WTA title at Indian Wells, beating Angelique Kerber in the final.
"When Kerber reached break point twice at 2-2 in the third set, Andreescu seemed, finally, to be out of ideas, and out of gas," wrote Steve Tignor at tennis.com.
"That’s when we found out what else she has. It’s commonly called the X-factor, and in Andreescu’s case, it comes in two parts - one athletic, one emotional, neither teachable."
"Andreescu has a remarkably complete game for a player of any age, much less an 18-year-old," observed Christopher Clarey in the New York Times. "Despite struggling physically at times against Svitolina in their semi-final and again versus Kerber, Andreescu was still able to display her full palette of all-court skills."
The legendary Martina Navratilova, a pundit for BT Sport in the U.K. during this tournament, likened the Canadian to Sir Andy Murray, saying: "Every time we thought, 'This is it – she doesn’t have the game or she doesn’t have the belief, the legs,' she just kept proving us wrong. It was a coming of age tournament. Bianca really came out of nowhere and she deserved to win. She played amazing tennis. This one is here to stay. I'm looking forward to seeing her develop into an even better tennis player."
British Fed Cup captain Anne Keothavong, on commentary duties for the same channel, said: "Just simply incredible. Bianca Andreescu, you are a star. What a performance...the tennis she produced - just outstanding."
"Andreescu has taken the tennis world by storm," noted Sports Illustrated. "All that’s left to do is wait for her next act."
